Fuck.

Chapter

Thirteen

It all happened so quickly.

Smoke swirled, making it impossible to see more than a metre ahead. The ringing in their ears made it impossible to hear. Their chances of survival? Worse than impossible.

They couldn’t fight—there was nothing left to fight with. The best Eva could hope for was to gather her people, keep them out of the way and hope to hell Grey’s men didn’t extract vengeance. It was the slimmest of possibilities but it was all they had.

Knowing they had precious little time, Eva gathered her noble fighters and told them to run for their lives. Their fallback was the residential quarters. The children were already there. It had two heavy wooden doors, which they’d barricade with furniture as best they could. Then all they could do was wait. They would defend themselves with knives and sticks until there wasn’t an adult left standing.

Rushing down the stone steps, they passed Lekan’s prone, headless body. Some bowed their heads in respect, some looked away. Nobody stopped.

Nearing the quarters, Akachi touched Eva’s arm. “What about Mr Loch?”

She didn’t hesitate. “Fuck him.”

“I do not wish to, but you have. That means you care, yes? Should you not at least release him? He said these were not his men. They are not good men. What is the saying about not wishing a fate on your worst enemy?”

Eva knew she was right. Again.

Snatchtrumpets.

With a huff she stopped walking. “Barricade this door. Do not open it for anything other than a shave and a haircut, you got it?”

“Shave and a… I am sorry, I do not understand.”

Eva knocked out the rhythm. “Shave and a haircut, two bits.”

“Ah yes, the children, they use this sign. Very good. And Miss Eva?”

“Yes, Akachi?”

“Your head, please keep it down.”

“If you insist.” She gave her a grim smile. “But first I’ll seal you up.”

It was a crude deception, hardly likely to work, but they had set it up anyway. A tapestry had been nailed above the door to hide the entry to the residence. To Eva it seemed obvious, but then, it would—it was her castle. When everyone was through she pushed a chest of drawers in front of the tapestry to distract prying eyes from the entrance. Eva ran towards the kitchen.

She knew risking her life for a man who had betrayed her was more idiotic than a Jar Jar Binks dildo. But she also knew why she was doing it. Human emotions aren’t operated by switches. They can’t be turned off at will, and they don’t adhere to logic. They’re far more complex than that. And stubborn. Only a few hours ago, Eva was falling in love with him. It takes more than the revelation of truth for the brain to say, “Oh, we don’t like this guy anymore? Okay, cool.” The heart simply isn’t that cooperative. So there Eva was, skulking around her castle, liable to be shot at any instant, looking to save the man who may have condemned every man, woman and child to death. Stupid brain.
